Transition Program

The Ivy Street School was one of the first schools to develop a separate Transition Program focusing on independent living, social skills, meaningful relationships, vocational choices, behavior management, life skills, and self-direction. The tailored curriculum provides for an intensive, immersive, community-based experience preparing students for life. In addition to class time, students may acquire jobs and internships, and work with individual therapists. The goals of this highly regarded program is to prepare students ages 17-22 for successful independent living.

The Transition Program curriculum focuses post-high school educational and vocational options, safety education, behavior management, social and relationship skills, health, hygiene, sex education, household maintenance, retirement planning, and leisure skills. Residential students may choose to learn yoga, cooking, social skills, budgeting, life skills, transportation and mobility, fitness, and any other interests they would like to explore.

Programming focuses on practical skills such as:

  • Public transportation
  • Leases
  • Resumes
  • Practical math and reading skills
  • Computer skills
  • Friendships and relationships
  • Social skills
  • Family support
  • Transition to adult services
  • Interviewing
  • Job searching/vocational skills
  • Memory strategies
