The clinical team adheres to the principals of Trauma Informed Care. Clinicians use modified versions of therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to deliver individual and group therapy. Clinicians are also trained in Social Thinking and have areas of interest and expertise including Transition Planning, Relaxation Techniques and Mindfulness, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Psychological Testing.
Each student is assigned to his or her own therapist and has weekly therapy sessions. Additionally our students are assigned a residential advocate to help coordinate services on a day to day basis. Therapists are also available for “check-ins” to help deal with situations as they arise. Clinicians collaborate with team members regarding each student and are frequently involved with classroom, recreational, vocational, and residential issues.
Self- management skills are developed in the context of relationships, social skills, and interactions with peers and adults. Groups cover important educational topics — such as human sexuality, peer relationships, self-awareness, and stress management — and provide a structured setting for testing individual skills. Students participate in groups both within their individual classrooms and across the school and residential settings.
Each family is invited to meet with the clinical staff and be an active part of student treatment. Our goal is for families to learn about what students are working on in order to help them use skills consistently across home, community, and school settings. We have a strong, involved family support network with a family support group and a Family Advisory Council that meet monthly. Caring for a young person with significant challenges can be lonely and stressful. We’re here to help.
Our clinical and nursing teams work closely with families and outside providers to assure a smooth continuum of care for all students. We have nurses on site from 7am to 9pm and a nurse on call for staff during the overnight hours. Our residential students can work with our in-house Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who also consults with our nursing and clinical teams weekly. We are located minutes from a variety of world-class hospitals and medical centers, allowing us to provide a continuum of care for students who see providers there as well as any medical emergencies that might develop while a student is at the Ivy Street School.
Our staff has licensed speech therapists, occupational therapists, and a physical therapist. In additional to working 1:1 with students, their expertise informs how we build each component of our programming, from vocational training to residential activities. The clinicians collaborate on projects such as a school newspaper and a weekly coffee shop, giving our students creative ways to practice therapeutic skills. Also, a Sensory Room offers a soothing environment for de-escalation and learning new coping strategies.
