Physical education helps teens of all abilities develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, and gain greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. At the Ivy Street School, the adaptive physical education curriculum allows for students with a range of disabilities to participate in an all-inclusive environment. Students engage in athletic sports and recreational activities that help them improve mobility and social skills.

Students may also choose to participate in the Ivy Street Hawks, our school’s athletic team that competes in the Special Olympics against other teens from across Massachusetts. The Hawks have won many competitions over the years, participating in events such as flag football tournaments at Gillette Stadium and Harvard Stadium, softball at Fenway Park, and the opportunity to play basketball on the court at halftime of a Boston Celtics game. These experiences build teamwork and sportsmanship, crucial skills for life.
